With the weather gods threatening to interfere yet again with this fixture it was a relief to arrive at the ground to discover it was raining everywhere but on the hallowed turf of the Willows. A quick discussion pre lunch with ‘Scrumpy’, my opposite number, it was decided that we would bat first, 35 overs an inning with retirement at 35.
We started with determined circumspection, neither of the bowlers being the aged individuals yours truely was led to believe by Bob ‘Loose with the Truth’ Masefield. Bob had even ceded his position to a spritely youth from Christ’s, reneging on his promise of his team being made up solely of twilighters.
Belligerent defence gave way to a flourish of runs from Davidson and Scott when the Crays introduced youthful pace to their attack, supporting the theory it was a day for old age and guile. Scott was finally retired on 41*, and the loss of Davidson saw two of our late ringers stride to the crease. J. Wilson and P. Harris knuckled down as the Crays took the pace off the ball and slowed our scoring to some degree, but with a late flurry of runs off the blade of Harris, Ingles and Drake the Willows pushed through to 187 off their 35. A fair total and within sight of my expectations.
We opened the bowling with McFedries (who had left his girdle at home) and yours truly and we started well restricting the batsmen for the first 7 overs until a sudden burst of activity forced a change of bowlers. Enter the ever miserly S. Woolliscroft who bowled with great accuracy well supported by Rusty Drake and Jingles. Despite the pressure applied by the veterans wickets were hard to come by and with a light drizzle developing it the ball began to resemble a bar of soap in the prison showers. As I said on the day, conditions built with Rusty Drake in mind.
As the ball began slipping through fingers so did the game as the Crays began to capitalise on the conditions. Catches were shelled, stump work fell off and ground fielding became more arduous in the greasy conditions let alone the poor bowlers trying to maintain some level of control. In the end the Crays managed to chase the total down with 6 wickets in hand and a couple of overs to spare.
Player of the day went to the umpires who withstood a barrage from Mike for failing to give a single LBW and as down payment for next time they umpire my bowling. Dick of the day went to the opposition captain Scrumpy for a shambolic failure to run out Rusty when Ingles called him through for a single that was never there and the two were at the strikers end bickering about who should have to leave.
Post match Libations were enjoyed at Winsome’s house with B. Dormer being the meat master.
