The Willows vs
Combined North West School XI
Combined North West School XI
Report by Andy Ellis
The Willows were on a 5 game loosing streak so when captain Andy Ellis arrived at a cold Willows ground on Sunday he was feeling the heat - especially with Mike Dormer waiting at the entrance gate.
The Northwest XI won the toss and choose to bat. The previous day they had scored 240 in school cricket so were feeling confident.
Openers Turner and Smith put on a hard fought 34 together before the fall of the first wicket to Willows opener bowler Taylor Holland. Willows bowlers Adrian McFedries and Holland hit good lengths and applied plenty of pressure. Particularly the nagging length from McFedries into a strong Southerly. He was rewarded with a wicket on the first ball to the new batsman where McFedries was heard saying “not even Don Bradman could have played that delivery”.
Turner then came in and fought hard for his 41 but rain interrupted play (and stopped some momentum). The umpires decided to take an early lunch. The weather cleared and the match continued.
With full stomachs and a spring in their step the Willows applied the pressure through mid pace bowlers Liam Robinson, Mark Harding, Ben Williams and Andy Ellis who between them took 5 quick wickets.
Spin bowlers Nigel De Maine and Grant Dickson were also very accurate scooping up the remaining 3 wickets and sending the Northwest XI into the sheds around the 35th over mark for 114.
After a 10 minute cup of tea the Willows were ready to chase down the target. Darin Cusack was chomping at the bit to open so captain Andy Ellis allowed this and paired him up with Kelvin Scott. This was the right choice - Cusack push for quick singles and fed the strike to outstanding player of the day Scott. Scott didn’t miss a beat and his stroke play and power was impressive. He smack a quick 81 before caught on the boundary. This brought in Tom Music and when Cusack edged behind on 21 Andy came out to finish the game. However in the spirit of cricket Andy decided to give some catching practice to the Northwest lads and played a beautiful late cut straight to gully.
Ben Williams came out and saw the willows home to an impressive victory.
The pitch played beautiful with good carry and bounce and moved enough off the seam to encourage the bowlers. The outfield was green and setting spectacular.
Was great having Sir John Hansen come out and enjoy lunch and share some stories also.
A fantastic day out with a great group of men. Was nice to see some old northwest schools players playing against some of the new crop; connecting, rubbing shoulders and sharing some of the traditions of the game together.
